In Georgia, it is now possible to study Yezidi theology. The Religious Council of Yezidis in Georgia (GREG) has opened an academy for this special purpose. Under certain conditions, interested persons can immediately enroll at the Theological Academy of Yezidis in Tbilisi which offers the following services:

  • Training and continuing education programmes in Yezidi religion for priests, theologians, teachers, researchers and students
  • Interdisciplinary research in the field of Yezidi theology
  • Development of scientific guidelines
  • Organization of seminars and conferences on topical issues of the Yezidi religion and public life
  • Participation in relief organizations and events as well as education activities
  • International cooperation on the field of higher and comparative religious studies
  • Publications and development of teaching material according to scientific criteria

The academy will also provide training courses led by highly qualified specialists in Yezidi theology for prospective priests. Its teaching staff consists of religious and cultural scholars, theologians, historians and philosophers who will interdisciplinary train the students. Following subjects will be taught as part of the education programme:

  • Language training for understanding the sacred Yezidi texts (Qewls) and fundamentals of the religion
  • Philosophy
  • History
  • Liturgy

While the Bachelor of Theology takes four years, the bachelor for priests lasts three. It is also planned to start a two-year master programme in the near future. Eligible to study are all interested Yezidis.

Tuition fees amount to 300 US Dollar per semester. Classes will be held by teachers from Georgian educational institutions and experts from abroad. Following the successful completion of the programme, priests will receive a certificate that will entitle them to become active in holy Yezidi temples and participate in religious institutions. Before the start of the study, every prospective student will be personally consulted by the teachers.
